Acer eLock Management controls the access to optical and floppy drives, removable storage devices and other interfaces to ensure that data remains safe when the computer is unattended. Acer eLock Management can also be used to prevent usage of drives, devices and interfaces on computers that are for public use, such as those in an open environment.
Acer eLock Management offers a convenient means of preventing data from being copied to external storage media, such as an optical disk, flash drive or floppy disk.
Before using Acer eLock Management
Use of Acer eLock Management requires system administrator privileges or else an error message will be displayed and Acer eLock Management will exit. Check user privileges first.
Create the Acer Empowering Technology password
After user privileges have been confirmed, you will be prompted to create an Acer Empowering Technology password if one does not exist.
The Acer eLock Management utility prompts to create an Acer Empowering Technology password with the window message “ This utility needs to set up a password before using it.” The two buttons at the bottom are “Setup” and “Cancel”. Clicking the “Setup” button leads to the window “ Empowering Technology Password Center” with the button marked “ Create a New Password”. Clicking the button Opens the third window prompting for “New Password”, “Confirm” and “Hint”.
The user interface
Acer eLock Management utilizes a simple graphical user interface to lock and unlock drives, devices and interfaces for which access can be controlled and are listed on the main screen, each with a lock and unlock button. After modifying settings, click the “Apply” button to enable changes. After clicking "Apply" or attempting to close the user interface with altered settings, an “Enter Pass word” dialog will appear. The Acer Empowering Technology password will have to be entered to enable the new settings, or press “Cancel” to abandon the modification.
Entering the password completes the operations and the Device is now locked. Once a device is locked the device will be disabled by Acer eLock Management and the drive icon and letter will not appear in Windows Explorer. The device cannot be accessed unless Acer eLock Management Unlocking password is entered and the Device is Unlocked.
Entering your password
Whenever you attempt to change the status of a drive, device or interface you will be asked for the Acer Empowering Technology password.
If the wrong password is entered, click “Hint:” to get password hint or “Retry” to enter the password again.
Popup messages
When Acer eLock Management is in use, popup messages are displayed in the bottom-right corner of the screen to alert you to the status of drives, devices and interfaces. Acer eLock Management will display a message informing you of drive, device or interface status whenever media is detected or inserted.
